What Is the Working Principle of an Excavator Rock Splitter?

  • Step 1: Drilling. First, use a rock drill or excavator to drill a hole of a specified diameter and depth in the rock. The size and depth of the hole are determined by the rock splitter model; for example, a YGM-S280 requires a hole with a diameter of 110mm and a depth of at least 1700mm.
  • Step 2: Inserting the splitting head. Operate the excavator to align the rock splitter’s splitting head with the drilled hole and insert it. The splitting head consists of a central inner wedge and two outer wedges on either side. Initially, they are closed, allowing for easy insertion.
  • Step 3: Hydraulic splitting. Start the hydraulic system; high-pressure oil pushes the cylinder piston downwards, driving the central inner wedge forward. The inner wedge, like a wedge, pushes the outer wedges apart, generating a huge lateral splitting force. This force acts on the inner wall of the borehole, splitting the rock in the predetermined direction within a few seconds. After splitting, the hydraulic cylinder retracts, the wedge returns to its original position, the splitting head is pulled out, and the machine moves to the next hole to continue working. The entire process is a continuous cycle with extremely high efficiency.

Why Can Static Force Split Hard Rock?

Rock has high compressive strength (granite has a compressive strength of 100-250 MPa), but very low tensile strength (only 1/10-1/20 of its compressive strength). The rock splitter utilizes this weakness of the rock—by applying lateral tensile force from the inside, the rock naturally splits from its weakest point.
