The NQ core drilling rig, commonly known as the NQ type core drilling rig, is also frequently referred to in the industry as NQ specification core drilling equipment. It is primarily used for sampling Φ71mm core samples, suitable for medium-deep hole exploration. It belongs to the same core drilling rig system as the PQ Core Drilling Rig (Φ114.3mm specification), differing only in sampling size and drilling depth. NQ is one of the internationally recognized core size standards, representing a core with a diameter of 47.6 mm. Its core function is to obtain core samples of underground rock strata and minerals through precise drilling, providing reliable data support for geological analysis, mineral assessment, and engineering design. YG, as a professional drilling equipment manufacturer, is committed to providing advanced and efficient NQ wireline coring rig solutions. How the Diamond NQ Core Drilling Rig Works
The NQ core drilling rig operates on two core principles: “rotary cutting” and “wireless core drilling.” First, the power system (diesel engine or electric motor) drives the rotary head to rotate at high speed via a transmission device. The rotary head drives the drill pipe and drill bit connected to it to rotate together, cutting the formation. The drill bit’s tip is inlaid with ultra-hard materials such as diamond, enabling efficient rock breaking. During drilling, a mud pump circulates mud through the drill pipe to the drill bit, cooling the drill bit, carrying rock cuttings, and stabilizing the borehole wall. The mud and rock cuttings then return to the surface along the annular space between the drill pipe and the borehole wall.
Once a certain drilling depth is reached and the core barrel is filled with rock, the wireline coring technology comes into play. Instead of pulling the entire drill pipe out of the borehole, the operator uses a wireline coring winch system to lower a steel cable with a special grabbing device into the drill pipe. Once the steel cable reaches the bottom of the core barrel, the grabbing device automatically locks the core barrel in place. Subsequently, the winch system pulls the wire rope, along with the core sampler filled with rock core, out of the drill pipe and sends it to the surface for core processing. After the rock core is removed, the empty core sampler is lowered back to the bottom of the drill pipe via a rope, and drilling continues. This “non-stop drilling and core sampling” operation mode greatly improves drilling efficiency, especially in deep hole drilling, where its advantages are even more pronounced. Similarly, the PQ core drilling rig also uses wireline coring technology, but with larger rock core sizes.

Frequently Asked Questions about NQ Fully Hydraulic Core Drilling Rigs
A1: The main difference lies in the core diameter. The NQ rig retrieves a core with a diameter of 47.6 mm, while the PQ rig retrieves a larger core with a diameter of 85 mm. The choice depends on the required core size and the geological exploration objectives.
A2: The biggest advantage of wireline coring rigs is that they eliminate the need for frequent drill pipe tripping, significantly improving drilling efficiency and reducing labor intensity and drilling costs, making them particularly suitable for deep hole drilling.
A3: Depending on the model, the maximum drilling depth of the YG NQ wireline coring rig can range from several hundred meters to over a thousand meters. Please refer to the technical specifications of each model or consult our sales team for specific parameters.
A4: Yes. Modern fully hydraulic core drilling rigs typically have a power head through-hole diameter greater than 121mm, sufficient for both HQ and NQ drill bits. Switching between different diameters is as simple as changing the chuck, gripper, and drill rod. YG drilling rigs come standard with a quick-change system, allowing for diameter switching in just 30 minutes.
A5: Yes, YG Machinery provides detailed operation manuals, video tutorials, and on-site or remote video guidance from overseas technicians to ensure your team can get started quickly.
